Getting started

Sign up, set your password and make your first calls.

Before you start

911 and emergency calling are not supported during early access. Topaz phones cannot reach 911 or other emergency services. Do not use Topaz as your only phone service where emergency calling may be needed: keep another way to call for help, such as a mobile phone. Emergency calling details →

You need an email address and a payment card. For phones, use a standard SIP desk phone or a free softphone app on a computer or mobile.

1. Sign up

Sign up at signup.topaz.tel → Enter your company name, your name and your email, optionally an area code to pick your phone number, choose your starting credit ($10, $25, $50 or $100) and pay on Stripe’s hosted checkout. Your card details go to Stripe and never touch Topaz. Your account is created straight away and the credit is added to your balance.

2. Set your password

We email you from no-reply@mail.topaz.tel with a link to set your password. The link is valid for 72 hours and signs you in to the Control panel. If the email doesn’t arrive, check your spam folder, then use “Forgot password” on the Control panel login page.

3. Add your team

In the Control panel, open SmartPBX and add a user with an extension number for each person who needs a phone. See Users & extensions.

4. Connect a phone

Add a device to a user to get its SIP username and password, then enter them with your account realm into a desk phone or softphone. See Phones & devices.

5. Route your number

If you picked a number at signup, it’s already on your account: open Main number in SmartPBX and add it. Otherwise, open Phone numbers in SmartPBX, search by area code and add one (Each phone number costs $4.99 a month, taken from your credit every 30 days). Outbound calls show your Topaz number as caller ID, so you need one to call out. Then choose where its calls go: a person, a ring group or an auto-attendant. See Phone numbers and Call routing.

6. Make test calls

Call one extension from another, call a mobile phone, then call your new number from outside. Never test by dialling 911: emergency calling is not supported.
